This graduate certificate and advanced master program is designed for hand specialists (certified hand therapists) who are interested in integrating research and practice.

Students who complete this program will be able to:

  • gain advanced knowledge in current treatment techniques and approaches

  • apply scientific and clinical research knowledge in practice

  • apply the research process in their own settings for evidence-based outcomes

  • understand knowledge and theory development in hand therapy

Courses are offered using a combination of formats to accommodate students from different locations:

   Certificate Course Description

The four courses are non-sequential, students can enter the program at any semester.  The research projects are integrated in the entire program to provide progressive experiential learning in various research activities.

Evidence-Based Practice in Hand Therapy (Offered Spring 2006)

This course will acquaint students with the kinds of evidence used in hand therapy through participation in a collaborative research project. Students will use quantitative and qualitative research tools to study typical clients in their current practice. Students will share research data through an online system developed for this study to document changes over time. Monthly conference calls will compare clients across settings.

Intervention and Outcome Measures Related to UE Conditions (Offered Fall 2006)

This course will examine goal setting and follow up with patients to evaluate outcomes and their significance. Two clients with work-related injuries will be followed using the established research method and study impact of outcomes and return-to-work factors. The use of occupation and activity based practice will be examined.

Functioning and Disability related to UE Conditions (Offered Spring 2007)

This course will examine the effects on functioning and adaptation to disability in persons with non-work-related injuries. Setting goals and the use of occupation/activity-based practice will be examined in this population. Similarities and differences between work-related and non-work-related clients will be compared. Seek/identify strategies to minimize impact of disability and maximize good health and quality of life.

Knowledge Development and Publication in Hand Therapy (Offered Fall 2007)

This course will compare outcomes from previous courses and examine ways to integrate and represent findings. Critiques of research work will be done by knowledgeable colleagues and peer reviewers. Examine methods to foster dissemination and utilization of research in hand therapy.

   Admission Criteria

Candidates are accepted on the basis of application, references, and space available:

  • certified hand therapists (occupational therapists and physical therapists) who have successfully completed their respective academic programs at accredited universities and are licensed to practice
  • all candidates must complete an application and provide letters of reference
