How do on-line courses function?  What if I’m not Internet savvy?

  • If you don’t regularly “surf the web”, that’s not a problem.  You will need to be able to connect with the Internet and have very basic skills.  Go to http://www.twu.edu/dl/orientation for a step-by-step how to do it?

  • The primary competency is the ability to navigate BlackboardThis is the platform on which all of the online courses are presented.  It operates much like windows.  For the past five years, our on-campus post-professional masters students have been using Blackboard http://online.twu.edu.  They have learned the process easily.

  • In each of the online courses, the instructor posts documents for reading and assignments.  Live-time discussions are pre-arranged and can occur in special Blackboard “chat rooms” accessible to students enrolled in the course.  Discussions threads occur often, and are so interesting that some of the students continue them outside of the designated class time.

  • The majority of online time is “on demand.”  That is, students read and respond to assignments and questions at the time that is most convenient for them
